Bushmob – new facilities provide expanded service to help young people make positive choices

BushMob run a number of unique programs to meet the needs of young people who want to get their lives back on track without alcohol, drugs or sniffing. Located in Central Australia, the service provides both residential treatment and outreach. Bush therapy is also an important part of their programs –  they go on journeys which include bushwalking, rock climbing, swimming, horse treks, and life skills.

The BushMob residential service has recently moved to a new location allowing them to increase the number of places from 10 to 20. Will MacGregor, CEO said, ‘Our new upgraded facility will provide young people with breathing and creative spaces, comfortable living areas and further opportunities to make choices around their substance misuse or other issues.’

Mr MacGregor said,  ‘It has a great feeling as it used to be used for accommodation and training for remote bush people, so there is already strong feelings of good past use and achievements. Thanks to the CAT and BushMob Board of Management for keeping faith and seeing the value of complex high needs young people using this facility, from our first Expression of Interest in 2009. Thanks also to the individuals and agencies of the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Government for seeing the possibilities of expanding BushMob’s brand of alcohol and drug treatment.’

In the first few weeks of using the new facility, the feedback from young people is positive. They like how the rooms are comfortable (cool in summer), there is plenty to eat, there are more activities and they see great possibilities for the future.

All the staff now have a work space and there is enough space for BushMob’s trailers and bush gear as well as their Pinnacle of Terror climbing trailer.

Mr Macgregor was recently awarded Australian of the year Northern Territory Award 2016 for his work with young people across Australia.
